Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
