A defense official has confirmed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in China-made cars.
He explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This broader security situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
