EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
